I had a pretty disappointing day in general. I spent about 3 hours in Astoria Park and 2 1/2 hours in Flushing Meadow and didn't see any hawks. Astoria Park was very quiet and Flushing Meadow was swarming with yuppies and cops for Yuppiefest 2009(aka the US Open). They turned the fountain on beneath the Unisphere, so I couldn't get with 100 feet of it without risking water damage to my camera. I would imagine the hawks are not fond of their home being showered with water all day long either.
I did manage to locate the lone Woodside Houses fledgling whose mother died in June. It is quite a large bird, bigger than any of the Astoria/Unisphere birds. It appears to be doing quite well, swooping from tree to tree, testing its landing ability, chasing squirrels, attacking twigs and leaves, and scaring the crap out of the kids in the projects as it swoops low over their heads.
